Letters of Recommendation

I am happy to support students by writing letters of recommendation. When requesting letters of recommendation, please closely follow the guidelines by completing all the steps below. This ensures that I have both the supporting information and time needed to write a strong letter of recommendation that is tailored to the particular opportunity to which you are applying.

Guidelines:

  • Request the letter of recommendation at least two months in advance.

  • Please write down your preferred name and pronouns as you would like for me to write it.

  • List the courses you’ve taken with me and/or if you worked in the Global Poetics Project Lab.

  • Provide a few bullet points about how you feel your research, coursework, or other experience with me is related to the opportunity to which you are applying.

  • If you worked in the Global Poetics Project Lab, please explain the team and time period, and include a detailed description of your specific contributions to the project and (if applicable) how your time with the GPP relates to your current pursuits.

  • Provide a few bullet points summarizing your motivation and interest related to the job, school, or funding opportunity to which you are applying. Why are you pursuing this opportunity and what qualifications, strengths, or experience do you bring to it?

  • Please tell me at least two examples of your demonstrated excellence in the classroom (For example, describe your contributions to a particular class discussion or explain how an assignment for this class opened your eyes to a specific area of research or affected the way you think about a certain issue.).

  • If it has been more than a year since you took my course, please fill me in on what you've been doing since I last saw you.

  • Feel free to share any additional information that you think is important. Is there anything in particular you want me to add to your application? (For example, discussing specific skills that I have observed or providing some information or perspective that other letter writers cannot.)

  • Send me your updated resume or C.V. (curriculum vitae)

  • List the exact due date and time due (e.g. November 15th at 5:00 pm/17:00)

  • Provide details about the program that you are applying to (a link to the funding opportunity or program is fine).

  • Ideally, all of the above information will come in a single e-mail so that I have all the information in one place.

  • Follow up with me by e-mail, 1 month, 2 weeks, and 2 days before the due date.
